clear building operations at a considerable cost to main-
tenance.
(c). Much valuable time is lost in getting through several
exchanges; often due to the operator, just then, having other duties in hand, before he can attend to the switching (d). Unnecessary interruptions occur, by the operator switching
in his telephone, while two offices are engaged in con-
versation.
(e). False ring-offs are made by an office wrongly answering a
call by ringing.
(f). Operators, having no technical training, send out mislead-
ing morning reports, thereby giving unnecessary and
additional work to the maintenance staff.
(g). Telephonic efficiency cannot be maintained under a dual
control.
6. Enclosures BI and BII show the proposed routes of the underground systems and the various connections thereto and BIII gives a tabulated list of these connections to each system of the
scheme.
7.
The advantages of the proposed scheme are:- (a). A saving to the Government of about $2,100 on maintenance
and 8940 on operating = 83,040 per annum would be affected, with the present number of offices.
(b). Provision would be made for future extensions, at a small
coat.
(o). More secrecy would be obtained over the lines, the operat-
ors having no time for listening.
(d). Lines could be tested by 8 a.m. and ordinary repairs made
by 9 am. each morning.
(e). The exchange and maintenance staffs would be under one
control and having a mutual training in care of plant, the cost of repairs would be reduced.
(f). All lines being on one switchboard, cutting off during conversation and other present annoyances would cease.
(g). Leas obstructions in the streets.
